I'm having a similar struggle with the Substack stuff... I'll be interested to see if you choose to leave, and if so, where you go! I spent two or three hours down the rabbit hole yesterday and so far I like none of the options as much as Substack, but I also want to take this mess they've made for themselves seriously.
I used to use mailchimp for newsletter stuff, so going back to that could be a thing, but from a UX standpoint, it's much more time-consuming to set up and much less discoverable, so I'd probably choose something else. I'm bookmarking options to check out more seriously when I have some time, and keeping tabs on where others are migrating. Let me know if you find something you'd recommend!
